The Greatest Gift
In medicine, we can often repair a broken bone or manage a chronic condition with the right intervention. We can even transplant organs to give someone a second chance at life. However, there is no treatment or surgery that can recover a lost hour. Time is the only resource that is completely irreplaceable. Once a moment passes, it moves from the realm of possibility into the archives of history. Recognizing the scarcity of our time should serve as a wake up call to live with intention.
The Power of Presence
We live in a world of constant digital noise where being busy is often worn as a badge of honor. But in my experience with patients facing their final chapters, they never wish they had spent more time answering emails or scrolling through feeds. What they value is presence. Giving someone your undivided attention is the highest form of generosity. When you offer your time to listen or truly see someone, you are giving them a portion of your life that you will never get back. It is the greatest gift one human can offer another.
Tracking Your Priorities
If you want to know what you truly value, look at your calendar. We might say our family, our health, or our contribution to the world are our top priorities, but our schedules often tell a different story. Where we choose to invest our hours reveals the true desires of our hearts. If we want to make the world a better place, we should audit our days to ensure our time aligns with our values.
Turning Seconds into Impact
A life of purpose doesn’t require you to be heroic. It simply requires you to realize that you are the steward of a limited supply of moments. By choosing to spend those moments on things that outlast you, you turn your fleeting time into a permanent legacy. The world becomes better not because we lived long lives, but because we gave our time to things that mattered.
